Store Effectively

Maximizing your storage unit requires more than just moving boxes in. With the right techniques, you can protect your belongings, optimize every square foot, and ensure easy access to items when you need them. Follow these proven strategies to make the most of your storage investment.

Things to Do

Use pallets, 2x4's, plywood — anything that will keep your items off the floor of the unit.
Utilize all the space in your unit. Make a plan for arranging your items and leave an aisle down the center so you have a walkway to the back of the unit.
Use freestanding shelves to help organize your unit.
Label boxes on all six sides and keep a list for easy reference. Put heavier boxes on the bottom, lighter ones on top, and keep boxes off the floor.
Store frequently used items at the front of the unit to avoid having to search for them.
Cover items with moving pads, sheets, or light blankets to protect them.
Check your unit once a month.
Disassemble tables, bed frames, etc. to save space. Wrap and label pieces, and bag hardware and mark it accordingly.
When disassembling electronics, place matching colored stickers on cords and their outlets. Use original boxes where possible.
Make sure appliances are clean and dry before storing; leave doors slightly ajar to prevent mildew.
Store couches on end when possible. Stack chairs seat to seat, and use paper pads between stacked furniture to avoid scratching.
Store mattresses and box springs on their long edges, wrapped and elevated off the floor with cut 2x4's.
Store mirrors and paintings on end, not flat. Pack books flat to protect their spines.
Rub a small amount of machine oil on metal tools, bicycles, and equipment to prevent rusting. Drain and clean equipment before storing.
Tape breakable items after wrapping to avoid mistaking them for excess paper. Use bubble wrap or unprinted paper.
Store clothing and draperies in wardrobe boxes, on hangers, to retain their shape.
Purchase insurance — if your belongings are worth storing, they're worth insuring.
Use Rubbermaid containers with tight-fitting lids; keep valuable items toward the rear of the unit.
Keep out-of-season clothes accessible — you may store items longer than anticipated.
Be aware of your surroundings. Alert the manager to anything suspicious.

Things Not To Do

Do not use plastic to cover your belongings — it retains moisture.
Do not store any food items, to prevent unwanted pests.
Do not pack boxes so heavy they're difficult to carry, especially with books.
Do not assume homeowners or renters insurance covers belongings in storage — purchase storage insurance.
Do not give out your password, gate code, or access information to anyone not listed as having access.
Do not use printed newspaper for wrapping — the ink may smudge onto your items.
Do not forget to clean appliances before storing them.
Do not store any toxins or flammables such as paint, oil, or gasoline.
